Regional Director of Health Services - Kegalla

Kegalle is one of the two districts in Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. The extent of the district is 1693km2 and height from sea level varies between 50m to 1800m. Kegalle district is bordered by Kurunegala to the north, Kandy and Nuwaraeliya districts to the east, Rathnapura to the south and Colombo and Gampaha to the west. Sri Lanka's best graphite mine is situated at Bogala in Kegalle District. Pinnawala elephant orphanage and the zoo has added a special value to the district. There are many historically significant places and beautiful locations which attract thousands of tourists daily. Rubber cultivation has stretched over most of the area of the district and minor export crops include coffee, cocoa, pepper, clove nutmeg and other spices. Kegalle district has 11 Divisional Secretariats and 573 GN divisions. The estimated population is 898,000 for 2022 and by gender highest percentage represents female. It is about 52.5%. When consider the population dispersion by age more than 30% are in the range of age 20-65y.Trend is the growing percentage of elderly population. The main health institution in the district is the District General Hospital Kegalle. The area of the Kegalle Regional Director of Health Services consists of 03 Base Hospitals, 19 Divisional Hospitals and 26 Primary Medical Care Units and 11 MOH offices. Apart from these there are three Special units, STD unit and the Chest Clinic. Mental Rehabilitation Center for long term psychiatric patients is established in the Divisional Hospital Dembatanpitiya. The total health staff of the district is more than 3000. Approximately 350 Medical Officers and 40 Consultants with other categories give their valuable service to the people in Kegalle district.
