Private Health Services Regulatory Council

Health services in the Sabaragamuwa Province provided by the state health sector consist of a full range of services from preventive care to palliative care. The services are delivered through a huge network of hospitals (General Hospital to PMCIs) and public health institutions (Special campaigns and MOH Offices). Despite these vast health facilities provided by the Ministry of Health, the capacity of the health service is not sufficient to fulfill the requirements and expectations of the clients and the population. Therefore private health sector provides a fair share of heath care to people who could afford them.

The Sabaragamuwa private health care sector plays a satisfactory role especially to the curative care through private hospitals, laboratories, full/part time general practitioners and channel centers.

There are 12 private hospitals established in the Sabaragamuwa province which provide facilities including inward treatment/surgeries, outpatient care and diagnostic services extended through various specialties and fields. However, only a few institutions in the private sector provide immunization.

The capacities of the health care facilities range from small-scale medical centers with minimum facilities to hospitals with highly sophisticated facilities including C.T scanning, Echocardiogram, physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. Private health care services have improved with time in Sabaragamuwa province, but need to be improved to a point of having a private, public partnership to cater the ever increasing health care demand of the vulnerable populations.

The quality of private health sector is supervised and regulated by the Provincial Private Health Services Regulatory Council (PHSRC), Sabaragamuwa. Development and monitoring of standards regarding registered medical institutions is one of the mandates of PHSRC. Ensuring the minimum criteria of recruitment and maintaining the standards of training are the other responsibilities. Investigation and addressing complaints regarding the private medical institutions also will be done by PHSRC. Quality patient care of the private health sector will be ensured by the above measures.
